I saw a butterfly

On June 15th my beloved Louie's body succumbed to this terrible OS.

I watched earlier that morning look around the back yard at the trees, the birds and his surrounding.

After that, his breathing became very labored and even though I talked to him and held him, he seemed NOT there!

At around 8 that evening I knew it was time to set him free from his sick body.

They say butterflies represent a transformation.

Since my beloved Louie has passed I see butterflies at work, and I know my friend is here with me.

Some friends say Louie has come back to me through my new Pyr I just got...yes you will meet him soon, some say Louie is piggybacking with Harry the new pup.

I think there are signs that Louie's spirit is a strong one and hopefully I will be gifted to have it in my life again!

Getting lost in the fix and avoiding the why?

I have a dog like some of you who is afflicted with cancer...OS. He is sadly dying of this horrible cancer. I fight the fight just like all of you and wish for a miracle everyday. I like many of you have spent thousands of dollars to fight this disease.

I read all the posts on the dog bone cancer groups and the artemesin and cancer group and am overwhelmed at how many of us have had more than one 4 legged friend die of cancer. This leads me to ask WHY ARE ALL OUR DOGS DYING OF CANCER?

I have my dog on so many herbs and pain meds and arte in the hopes of fixing this thing just like all of you! I have succeeded at keeping the ultimate loss for my Louie for over a year. But s I sit here writing this I think all of us need to raise up a very loud voice to all the Vets treating our friends, all the Vet foundations, all the techs, all the dog food makers and get some answers. I read the other day that 8000 dogs are diagnosed with cancer each day. Every day, almost 4200 people are diagnosed with cancer in the United States.

We are a strong group fighting a fight that is consuming every living being and I so wished all of us could somehow become a loud voice and rattle the halls of the govt. until they take all that money they waste and put it to the research on cancer and holistic intervention.

My grief and diligence in fighting cancer for Louie has raised the levels of my voice so what say you....how can we be heard on this terrible disease and find the WHY?

I don't want one more dog or cat or person to suffer without a fight!

Dr Palmquist and Me

Thought I would share a picture of my favorite Holistic vet, Dr Palmquist.

Any of you dogs or cats not feeling well, this is the guy to go see. He has such a passion for herbs and he has been giving me a regiment of all types of herbs to help me fight this cancer. If you visit him on twitter you will see he really believes the source of much of our health issues is due to what we eat (or don't eat) and our environment.

Here's his Twitter account: @ and here is mine....yep I am on Twitter: @dmuscatelli.

I am a dog and I have bone cancer! Today begins my story!

Hi, I am a 6 and half year old Great Pyrenees. I'm a great big fellow called Louie. I own Debby and April even though Debby is really the one I own exclusive. I've been living with Debby and April since I was five weeks old and I love them a lot. I also live with my brother Rufus, but he is older than I am.

I have OS, bone cancer and this is my story!

I live in the present so I will bring you up to what's been happening so far. I have had my front left leg amputated because I had bone cancer and damn it hurt and one day the bone broke. I was in so much pain and poor Debby just was beside herself as to what to do. I heard her on the phone with the receptionists at the vet telling her she thought I broke my leg. I was in such a fog of pain and I saw her waiting for the doctor and then I heard her hang up the phone all of a sudden.

April and Debby were crying and talking and trying to figure out what to do next and then I heard Debby crying. I hate it when she cries, she is so sad! I heard her say she didn't know what to do and if I would just give her a sign she would have them amputate my leg. I remember getting up and hopping across the room and nudging her to tell her everything would be alright.

Next day I was off to the vet and the nice Doctors at Northside Vet in San Bernardino, CA took care of me.

I am now a front amputee but that's ok. Lately though my back leg has been hurting and yesterday I had xrays and it might be that the bone cancer has settled into my leg. Guess we will be taking a trip to my favorite doctor, Dr Palmquist in Inglewood, Ca to see what he thinks.

How Glyphosate Worsens Modern Diseases

How Glyphosate Worsens Modern Diseases

By Dr. Mercola
The more we learn about genetically engineered (GE) foods, the clearer the dangers become. I’ve warned you of the potential dangers of GE foods for many years now, as I was convinced that the artificial combining of plants with genes from wildly different kingdoms is bound to cause problems.

As the years roll on, such suspicions are becoming increasingly validated. In recent weeks, we’ve not only learned that GE corn is in no way comparable to natural corn in terms of nutrition, we’re also discovering the ramifications of dousing our crops with large amounts of glyphosate — the active ingredient in Monsanto’s broad-spectrum herbicide Roundup.
GE crops are far more contaminated with glyphosate than conventional crops, courtesy of the fact that they’re engineered to withstand extremely high levels of Roundup without perishing along with the weed.
A new peer-reviewed report authored by Anthony Samsel, a retired science consultant, and a long time contributor to the Mercola.com Vital Votes Forum and Dr. Stephanie Seneff, a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has fortunately received quite a bit of mainstream media attention.
Their findings, along with the development of another breed of “gene silencing” crops, makes the need for labeling all the more urgent, and the advice to buy certified organic all the more valid.

How Glyphosate Worsens Modern Diseases

While Monsanto insists that Roundup is safe and “minimally toxic” to humans, Samsel and Seneff's research tells a different story altogether. Their report, published in the journal Entropy,1 argues that glyphosate residues, found in most commonly consumed foods in the Western diet courtesy of GE sugar, corn, soy and wheat, “enhance the damaging effects of other food-borne chemical residues and toxins in the environment to disrupt normal body functions and induce disease.” According to the authors:
"Negative impact on the body is insidious and manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body.”
The main finding of the report is that glyphosate inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, a large and diverse group of enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of organic substances. This, the authors state, is “an overlooked component of its toxicity to mammals.”
One of the functions of CYP enzymes is to detoxify xenobiotics—chemical compounds found in a living organism that are not normally produced or consumed by the organism in question. By limiting the ability of these enzymes to detoxify foreign chemical compounds, glyphosate enhances the damaging effects of those chemicals and environmental toxins you may be exposed to.
Dr. Stephanie Seneff has been conducting research at MIT for over three decades. She also has an undergraduate degree in biology from MIT and a minor in food and nutrition, and I have previously interviewed her about her groundbreaking insights into the critical importance of sulfur in human health. Not surprisingly, this latest research also touches on sulfur, and how it is affected by glyphosate from food.
“Here, we show how interference with CYP enzymes acts synergistically with disruption of the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids by gut bacteria, as well as impairment in serum sulfate transport,” the authors write.
“Consequences are most of the diseases and conditions associated with a Western diet, which include gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
We explain the documented effects of glyphosate and its ability to induce disease, and we show that glyphosate is the 'textbook example' of exogenous semiotic entropy: the disruption of homeostasis by environmental toxins.”

The Link Between Your Gut and the Toxicity of Glyphosate

The impact of gut bacteria on your health is becoming increasingly more well-understood and widely known. And here, we see how your gut bacteria once again play a crucial role in explaining why and how glyphosate causes health problems in both animals and humans. The authors explain:
“Glyphosate’s claimed mechanism of action in plants is the disruption of the shikimate pathway, which is involved with the synthesis of the essential aromatic amino acids, phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan. The currently accepted dogma is that glyphosate is not harmful to humans or to any mammals because the shikimate pathway is absent in all animals.
However, this pathway is present in gut bacteria, which play an important and heretofore largely overlooked role in human physiology through an integrated biosemiotic relationship with the human host. In addition to aiding digestion, the gut microbiota synthesize vitamins, detoxify xenobiotics, and participitate in immune system homeostasis and gastrointestinal tract permeability. Furthermore, dietary factors modulate the microbial composition of the gut.”
As noted in the report, incidences of inflammatory bowel diseases and food allergies have substantially increased over the past decade. According to a recent CDC survey, one in 20 children now suffer from food allergies2 — a 50 percent increase from the late 1990’s. Incidence of eczema and other skin allergies have risen by 69 percent and now affect one in eight kids. Samsel and Seneff argue it is reasonable to suspect that glyphosate’s impact on gut bacteria may be contributing to these diseases and conditions. They point out that:
“...Our systematic search of the literature has led us to the realization that many of the health problems that appear to be associated with a Western diet could be explained by biological disruptions that have already been attributed to glyphosate.
These include digestive issues, obesity, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, Parkinson’s disease, liver diseases, and cancer, among others. While many other environmental toxins obviously also contribute to these diseases and conditions, we believe that glyphosate may be the most significant environmental toxin, mainly because it is pervasive and it is often handled carelessly due to its perceived nontoxicity.
...[T]he recent alarming increase in all of these health issues can be traced back to a combination of gut dysbiosis, impaired sulfate transport, and suppression of the activity of the various members of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) family of enzymes.”

Former Navy Scientist Exposes Health Hazards of Glyphosate

Former US Navy staff scientist Dr. Nancy Swanson has a Ph.D. in physics, holds five US patents and has authored more than 30 scientific papers and two books on women in science. Ten years ago, she became seriously ill, and in her journey to regain her health she turned to organic foods. Not surprisingly (for those in the know) her symptoms dramatically improved. This prompted her to start investigating genetically engineered foods.
She has meticulously collected statistics on glyphosate usage and various diseases and conditions, including autism. A more perfect match-up between the rise in glyphosate usage and incidence of autism is hard to imagine... To access her published articles and reports, please visit Sustainable Pulse,3 a European website dedicated to exposing the hazards of genetically engineered foods.
According to Dr. Swanson:4
“Prevalence and incidence data show correlations between diseases of the organs and the increase in Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the food supply, along with the increase in glyphosate-based herbicide applications. More and more studies have revealed carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting effects of Roundup at lower doses than those authorized for residues found in Genetically Modified Organisms.”
“The endocrine disrupting properties of glyphosate can lead to reproductive problems: infertility, miscarriage, birth defects, and sexual development. Fetuses, infants and children are especially susceptible because they are continually experiencing growth and hormonal changes. For optimal growth and development, it is crucial that their hormonal system is functioning properly.
The endocrine disrupting properties also lead to neurological disorders (learning disabilities (LD), attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), autism, dementia, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder). Those most susceptible are children and the elderly.”

Warning! EPA Raises Limits for Allowable Glyphosate Residues

Amazingly, just as more independent reports are emerging confirming the health hazards of glyphosate and GMOs, the Environmental Protection Agency5 (EPA) is proposing to RAISE the allowed residue limits of glyphosate in food and feed crops! As reported by GM Watch 6:
“The allowed level in teff animal feed will be 100 parts per million (ppm); and in oilseed crops, 40 ppm. Allowed levels in some fruits and vegetables eaten by humans will also rise.”
Root and tuber vegetables, with the exception of sugar, will get one of the largest boosts, with allowable residue limits being raised from 0.2 ppm to 6.0 ppm. The new level for sweet potatoes will be 3 ppm.
“As a comparison, malformations in frog and chicken embryos were documented7 by Prof Andres Carrasco's team at 2.03 ppm glyphosate, when injected into the embryos,” GM Watch writes.
Yet despite all the evidence, the EPA rule states:
"EPA concludes that there is a reasonable certainty that no harm will result to the general population or to infants and children from aggregate exposure to glyphosate residues."
Monsanto has in fact petitioned and received approvals for increases in residue levels for several crops. Why? Because the weeds are getting increasingly resistant, requiring farmers to increase the amount of Roundup they have to spray just to keep up with the superweeds created by the excessive use of the chemical in the first place...

The Rise of Superweeds

A recent article in Nature Magazine8 addressed some of the environmental and societal concerns associated with genetically engineered crops. One of them is the rise in crop-destroying superweeds, as weeds develop resistance to glyphosate. This was yet another possibility that was initially pooh-pooh’d by Monsanto. However, truth has a way of eventually becoming self evident, and now glyphosate resistance is becoming so obvious the facts are hardly disguisable. According to the article:
“As late as 2004, the company was publicizing a multi-year study suggesting that rotating crops and chemicals does not help to avert resistance. When applied at Monsanto’s recommended doses, glyphosate killed weeds effectively, and 'we know that dead weeds will not become resistant,' said Rick Cole, now Monsanto’s technical lead of weed management, in a trade-journal advertisement at the time.
The study,9 published in 2007, was criticized by scientists for using plots so small that the chances of resistance developing were very low, no matter what the practice.
Glyphosate-resistant weeds have now been found in 18 countries worldwide, with significant impacts in Brazil, Australia, Argentina and Paraguay... And Monsanto has changed its stance on glyphosate use, now recommending that farmers use a mix of chemical products and ploughing. But the company stops short of acknowledging a role in creating the problem...

Source: Ian Heap, International Survey of Herbicide Resistant Weedswww.weedscience.org/graphs/soagraph.aspx (2013)

To offer farmers new weed-control strategies, Monsanto and other biotechnology companies, such as Dow AgroSciences, based in Indianapolis, Indiana, are developing new herbicide-resistant crops that work with different chemicals, which they expect to commercialize within a few years.”
What the author fails to mention is that some of these new herbicide-resistant crops are being designed to withstand chemicals that could be even more destructive, both environmentally and with regards to human health—especially in light of Samsel and Seneff's new research.
For example, Dow AgroSciences has developed a new generation of genetically modified (GM) crops -- soybeans, corn and cotton -- designed to resist a major ingredient in Agent Orange, the herbicide called 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D).
The use of 2,4-D is not new; it’s actually one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. What is new is that farmers will now “carpet bomb” staple food crops like soy and corn with this chemical at a previously unprecedented scale—just the way glyphosate has been indiscriminately applied as a result of Roundup Ready crops. In fact, if 2,4-D resistant crops receive approval and eventually come to replace Monsanto's failing Roundup-resistant crops as Dow intends, it is likely that billions of pounds will be needed, on top of the already insane levels of Roundup being used (1.6 billion lbs were used in 2007 in the US alone).

Gene Transfer Hazards, and the Latest 'Gene Silencing' Crops

Nature Magazine also discusses the spread of transgenes to wild crops. Mexico in particular has reported the spread of GE corn despite the fact that GE crops are not approved for commercial planting in Mexico. It is believed that the transgenes originated in corn imported from the US, and that local farmers may have planted some of the corn originally purchased for consumption, not realizing they were genetically engineered.
Cross-breeding between native and GE varieties may have allowed for the continued spread of transgenic DNA. Sadly, once present, it’s virtually impossible to get rid of these transgenes, which means that native species may eventually be eliminated entirely—a fate that cuts deep into the heart of the Mexican people, where corn is considered sacred.

Latest Breed of GE Crops Can Silence Your Genes... What Then?

Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) has developed a type of genetically engineered (GE) wheat that may silence human genes, which could have truly disastrous health consequences.
Last year, University of Canterbury Professor Jack Heinemann released results from genetic research he conducted on the wheat, which unequivocally showed that molecules created in the wheat, intended to silence wheat genes to change its carbohydrate content, can match human genes and potentially silence them. Heinemann’s research revealed over 770 pages of potential matches between two genes in the GE wheat and the human genome. Over a dozen matches were “extensive and identical and sufficient to cause silencing in experimental systems,” he said.
Experts warned that eating this GE wheat could lead to significant changes in the way glucose and carbohydrates are stored in the human body, which could be potentially deadly for children and lead to serious illness in adults. Yet despite the seriousness of these findings, regulators are ignoring and dismissing such warnings. According to the Institute of Science in Society,10 the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved at least five such GE food products already.
Rather than using in vitro DNA modification (which is how Roundup Ready and Bt crops are created), this new breed of genetically engineered crops use a wholly different approach. In vitro DNA modification results in the creation of a new protein, but this new breed is designed to change their RNA content, thereby regulating gene expression within the plant. RNA is one of three major macromolecules, like DNA. Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) is responsible for regulating more than one-third of human genes. By engineering the plant to produce dsRNA, the plant can be “instructed” to silence specific genes—within itself, and potentially within your body...

A Global Experiment Based on Faulty Assumptions is Bound to Take its Toll...

It is assumed that both DNA and RNA are broken down in your gut when you consume them in GE food, which is why they both have GRAS status (Generally Regarded as Safe). However, experiments dating back to the early 1990’s have contradicted this assumption.11 According to Dr. Mae Wan-Ho12 (for references, see the original article):
“There have been many publications documenting the ability of DNA to survive digestion in the gut and to pass into the bloodstream whenever investigations were carried out with sufficiently sensitive detection methods. DsRNA in particular, is much more stable than single stranded RNA. DsRNA produced in genetically modified plants survive intact after passing through the gut of insects and worms feeding on the plants.
Also, oral exposure of insect pests to dsRNA was effective in inducing RNA interference. Worms can even absorb dsRNA suspended in liquid through their skin, and when taken in, the dsRNA can circulate throughout the body and alter gene expression in the animal. In some cases the dsRNA taken up is further multiplied or induces a secondary reaction resulting in more and different secondary dsRNA with unpredictable targets. Thus, not only are dsRNA mechanisms universal to all plants and animals, there is already experimental evidence that they can act across kingdoms.”
Dr. Mae Wan-Ho also points out research from China, which has demonstrated that dsRNAs can survive digestion and be taken up via the gastrointestinal tract, and that microRNA (miRNA) from food can circulate in the human blood stream and have the potential to turn off human genes.
“The data also indicated that some dsRNAs from plants are found more frequently than predicted from their level of expression in plants; in other words, there may be a selective retention or uptake of some miRNA molecules,” she writes.

Most Consumers Still Unaware of GMO Risks

The biotech industry, led by Monsanto, is increasing their propaganda efforts to reshape their public image, and sway your opinion against the need to label genetically engineered foods. As The Atlantic recently reported.13
“Given its opposition to the labeling of GM foods… it seems clear that Monsanto wants you to close your eyes, open your mouth, and swallow."
Indeed, many consumers are still in the dark about the very real risks that GE crops pose, both to the environment and human health. This is precisely what the biotech industry wants, even as increasing research demonstrates the many dangers associated with GE foods. For example, one recent study found that rats fed a type of genetically engineered corn that is prevalent in the US food supply for two years developed massive mammary tumors, kidney and liver damage, and other serious health problems. This was at dietary amounts of about 10 percent. Does 10 percent or more of your diet consist of genetically engineered ingredients? If processed foods form the basis of your diet, then you’re likely consuming FAR MORE genetically modified organisms (GMOs) than that...
Unfortunately, you can't know for sure how many items in your fridge and pantry might contain GMO since the US does not require genetically engineered foods to be labeled. With the emergence of “gene silencing” crops and the latest findings from Samsel and Seneff, the need for labeling couldn’t possibly be greater.

Keep Fighting for Labeling of Genetically Engineered Foods

While California Prop. 37 failed to pass last November, by a very narrow margin, the fight for GMO labeling is far from over. The field-of-play has now moved to the state of Washington, where the people's initiative 522, "The People's Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act," will require food sold in retail outlets to be labeled if it contains genetically engineered ingredients. As stated on LabelitWA.org:
"Calorie and nutritional information were not always required on food labels. But since 1990 it has been required and most consumers use this information every day. Country-of-origin labeling wasn't required until 2002. The trans fat content of foods didn't have to be labeled until 2006. Now, all of these labeling requirements are accepted as important for consumers. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also says we must know with labeling if our orange juice is from fresh oranges or frozen concentrate.
Doesn't it make sense that genetically engineered foods containing experimental viral, bacterial, insect, plant or animal genes should be labeled, too? Genetically engineered foods do not have to be tested for safety before entering the market. No long-term human feeding studies have been done. The research we have is raising serious questions about the impact to human health and the environment.
I-522 provides the transparency people deserve. I-522 will not raise costs to consumers or food producers. It simply would add more information to food labels, which manufacturers change routinely anyway, all the time. I-522 does not impose any significant cost on our state. It does not require the state to conduct label surveillance, or to initiate or pursue enforcement. The state may choose to do so, as a policy choice, but I-522 was written to avoid raising costs to the state or consumers."
Remember, as with CA Prop. 37, they need support of people like YOU to succeed. Prop. 37 failed with a very narrow margin simply because we didn't have the funds to counter the massive ad campaigns created by the No on 37 camp, led by Monsanto and other major food companies. Let's not allow Monsanto and its allies to confuse and mislead the people of Washington and Vermont as they did in California. So please, I urge you to get involved and help in any way you can, regardless of what state you live in.
  • No matter where you live in the United States, please donate money to these labeling efforts through the Organic Consumers Fund.
  • If you live in Washington State, please sign the I-522 petition. You can also volunteer to help gather signatures across the state.
  • For timely updates on issues relating to these and other labeling initiatives, please join the Organic Consumers Association on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter.
  • Talk to organic producers and stores and ask them to actively support the Washington initiative.

Louie so hates his Air Conditioned Dog Run

Don't think a Tripawd can't become spoiled. Louie, while being just about the cutest, dog in the Western part of California, is a spoiled brat at times. Because we live in Southern California, we built Louie and Rufus an air conditioned kennel. This kennel is a class act building with electricity, radio, air conditioning and a back-up swamp cooler and misters.

Does Louie appreciate all this costly effort?

Well see for yourself. This is a picture of Louie thinking he is hiding behind our porch swing after being told to go get in his kennel at 8 in the morning:

House Dust Mites Can Drive Your Cat or Dog Nuts

Great article on dog allergies. Poor Louie and Rufus have been itching and scratching for months now. Could well be Dust Mites.  Article found here: http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2013/05/08/house-dust-mites.aspx?e_cid=20130508_PetsNL_art_1&utm_source=petnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art1&utm_campaign=20130508

House Dust Mites Can Drive Your Cat or Dog Nuts

Dust mite allergies are extremely common among dogs and cats (and humans), but because house dust mites are microscopic, many pet owners think they couldn’t possibly present much of a problem.
But the fact is when we decided to bring pets into our homes and onto our furniture and beds, we increased their exposure to these mites. Over time, our dogs and cats have become sensitized to the little critters just as we have.

House Dust Mites

Dermatophagoides farina and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, more commonly known as dust mites, are found in materials like carpeting, upholstered furniture, mattresses, bedding, and cloth toys. They thrive in warm, moist air (the kind we exhale during sleep) and darkness -- which is why they are often found in bedding. Their bodies are translucent.
Dust mites survive on a diet of dead skin, bacteria, fungi and viruses in the environment. They prefer to feed on the skin of hypersensitive (allergic) individuals because the lipids in their skin are different from those of non-allergic people.
What makes dust mites allergenic for pets and people is a protein found in their feces.

Symptoms of Dust Mite Allergies in Your Pet

Because house dust mites are a problem year-round, allergies to them tend not to be seasonal. However, they are known to be worse in the spring and fall.
From 30 to 80 percent of allergic dogs and cats test positive for dust mite sensitivity. Pets that once lived primarily outdoors can develop sensitivity after they’ve lived indoors for a period of time.
In dogs, signs of a dust mite allergy include bacterial skin infections; itching, especially around the face and on the feet; recurrent ear inflammation or infections; and seborrhea (a red, itchy rash with white scales).
Kitties with a dust mite allergy may develop something called eosinophilic granuloma complex that results in skin lesions; itching; acne on the chin; recurrent ear inflammation or infections; and a disease of the foot pads called plasma cell pododermatitis, or “pillow foot.”

Diagnosing and Treating Dust Mite Allergies

Your vet will look for a history that indicates your pet’s condition is non-seasonal, and is not related to either food sensitivities or skin parasites. Next your dog or cat should be either skin or serum-tested for sensitivity to dust mites.
Once your pet has a confirmed diagnosis of dust mite allergy, I recommend first trying to rid his environment of mites. This is a bit of a challenge, because studies show the most effective method of treatment is to air out fabrics your pet is exposed to on either a hot, sunny or cold dry day for 12 hours, then vacuuming.
Other suggestions include:
  • Switching to mattress covers made of micro-porous fabric (“dust mite” covers)
  • Covering your pet’s bed in a sheet that repels dust mites and washing it weekly
  • Washing bedding in hot water at least monthly, or in cold water and tea tree oil
  • Removing carpets from bedrooms
  • Vacuuming all carpets and upholstery often (at least weekly) using a vacuum with a HEPA filter
  • Steam cleaning mattresses, pet bedding and upholstered furniture
Many veterinarians recommend immunotherapy (allergy shots or under-the-tongue drops). This is a much safer option than immuno-suppressant drugs like cyclosporine or corticosteroids. I prefer to hold off on powerful drugs that shut down the immune system in favor of dealing with the animal’s environment first, in conjunction with some other safe, common sense steps. These include regular foot soaks and bathing to wash away allergens and soothe irritated skin; feeding a species-appropriate, anti-inflammatory diet; providing fresh, good quality drinking water; and avoiding over-vaccinating/over-medicating to insure your pet’s immune system remains strong and resilient.
You can also consider investing in an air purifier to control dust mites, and switching to non-toxic cleaning agents to lessen your pet’s overall toxic load.
Keep in mind it only takes a miniscule amount of dust mite allergen to create an allergic response in your dog or cat. So the more effective your mite eradication efforts, the more comfortable your allergic pet will be.

Is there dog meat in your dog's food? Could this be making our dogs get cancer?

I came across a good article on our dog food and how it's made. It might surprise pet owners to find out that the millions of dogs and cats billing euthanize go into our dog food...not all of it but a great majority of it. This means the injection used for euthanization, steroids and any other medicines the dead animals might have been on is in it to.

A great site to find out what's in your pets food is Dog Food Advisor.

Are there really pets in pet food?

Unfortunately when a vet tells a grieving pet owner they will “take care” of their dead loved one, they usually mean sending it off with a disposal company for rendering. This is all perfectly legal. Many veterinarians and especially shelters don’t bury or cremate animals.

Reporter John Eckhouse was one of the first people to discover the practice of sending euthanized pets to the rendering plants. A rendering plant employee was quoted as saying “thousands and thousands of pounds of dogs and cats are picked up and brought here everyday”. Although many in the pet food industry deny they use euthanized animals, proof that the practice goes on continues to surface. Research done on rendering plants that sell meat to pet food companies found that the rendering plants accept everything from road kill, dead zoo animals and euthanized pets from both shelters and veterinary clinics. One such plant was found to have rendered 11 tons of dogs and cats in one week! Another plant in California reported processing an average of 200 ton of dogs and cats per month.

In the 1990’s veterinarians began reporting to the FDA/CVM that the drug they used for anesthetizing and euthanizing pets, sodium pentobarital, seemed to be losing its effectiveness. This prompted the CVM to research the cause. In 1998 they went about testing dry dog food containing the ingredients meat and bone meal, animal digest and animal fat. They found the drug sodium pentobarital in 31 of the 37 pet foods tested. They concluded that animals were becoming immune to the drug from eating food laced with sodium pentobarbital, and the likely source of the chemical was euthanized animals.

They went on to conduct a study to find the levels of the drug in parts per billion for each food. Some actual examples in these results were:
32 ppb: Old Roy—Puppy Formula, chicken and beef
25.1 ppb: Heinz—Kibbles ‘n Bits Beefy Bits
16.4 ppb: Super G—Chunk Style Dog Food
15 ppb: Weis—Total High Energy Chicken and Rice
11.6 ppb: Pet Gold—Master Diet Puppy Formulation
10 ppb: Old Roy—Puppy Formula, beef flavor
Note that these products may be free of this drug now, as these are the findings in 2000.
Here's the article I am referring to above:

If the package of dog food that you regularly purchase for your dog had a picture of a dead dog on the front accompanied by the words, "Fortified with 100 percent natural dog meat!" would you still buy it? Probably not. And yet this might very well be what you are scanning at the grocery store checkout and scooping into your dog's bowl.

Dog food is made from many strange things, only a few of which are evident in the list of ingredients. The packaging tends to depict fat, healthy chickens; vegetables that look like they ought to win a ribbon at the county fair; and either thick, juicy steaks or sedate-looking cows. But at around $15 for a 15-pound bag of dry food, nobody is spending enough money to turn a T-bone into dog food. The stuff that ends up in dog food is material that can't be sold as food for humans. We have different standards for what our animals eat from what we would put in our own mouths, but where should we draw the line?

Under Food and Drug Administration regulations, only about 50 percent of a cow can be sold for human consumption. The hide, bones, digestive system and its contents, brain, feces, udders, and various other undesirable parts are all left over after a cow is slaughtered and butchered. The stuff that can't even go into hotdogs gets consolidated and shipped to rendering plants. Slaughterhouses that handle pigs and chickens also send their leftovers to rendering plants. So do many other facilities that find themselves with large volumes of otherwise unusable dead animal parts, including animal shelters and veterinary clinics that euthanize a lot of animals.

A rendering plant has a huge grinder that is filled up with whatever comes in. Some rendering plants are pickier than others, and some process ingredients in different batches to comply with state or local laws. But on the whole, most tend to dump in whatever they receive and start the grinder when it is full: parts from slaughterhouses, whole carcasses of diseased animals, cats and dogs from shelters, zoo animals, road kill and expired meat from grocery store shelves (tossed in fully packaged, complete with plastic wrap and Styrofoam).

This material is slowly pulverized into one big blend of dead stuff and meat packaging. It is then transferred into a vat where it is heated for hours to between 220-270 degrees F. At such high temperatures, the fat and grease float to the top along with any fat-soluble compounds or solids that get mixed up with them. Most viruses and bacteria are killed. The fat can then be skimmed off, packaged, and renamed. Most of this material is called "meat and bone meal." It can be used in livestock feed, pet food or fertilizer. It joins a long list of ingredients that you might prefer not to see in your pet's food.

There is essentially no federal enforcement of standards for the contents of pet food. FDA technically has authority, but the agency has passed this off to a set of partnerships and nongovernmental organizations that encourage mostly voluntary compliance with the few federal standards. The Association of American Feed Control Officials takes the lead in setting and maintaining standards, but it conducts no testing of food and has no enforcement authority. In practical terms, regulation of the contents of pet food is largely accomplished by those individual states that bother to get involved. Some states, such as Florida and Nevada, have no regulations at all. Others, such as California, require that rendered pets be labeled as "dry rendered tankage" rather than meat and bone meal. However, even California allows rendered pets to be processed and sold out of state for pet food as meat and bone meal. The city of Los Angeles alone sends about 200 tons of dead pets to a rendering plant each month. There is no inspection of pet food or meat and bone meal shipped in from other states.

Many pet food manufacturers say that they are not using rendered pets to make a cannibal of your dog. But how would they really know? There is no simple way to look at a shipment of meat and bone meal and tell exactly what species are in the mix. The protein percentage of a load of cats and dogs looks basically the same as a shipment of carcasses from a poultry farm. The rendering industry gets vague about what is in meat and bone meal, even in otherwise highly technical documents.

The idea of pet dogs and cats being used to feed other dogs and cats is disturbing to us. The mangled road kill, diseased cattle and pigs that died before making it to the slaughterhouse all seem like things that we wouldn't want anywhere near our pets. But does the ick factor really make it wrong? It is difficult to imagine what else we would do with all of this dead biomass if it wasn't being rendered, and it seems wasteful to feed high-quality meat to pets who can't tell the difference. It is, in a sense, a laudable form of recycling.

Perhaps the real problem is with the other things that hitch a ride with the dead cats, dogs, zoo animals, and some of the livestock that were rejected for human consumption. Many of these animals died after being medicated for health problems that contributed to their deaths, and not all drugs are neutralized during the rendering process. Meat and bone meal can contain antibiotics, steroids and even the sodium pentobarbital used to kill pets at shelters. By definition, a lot of the animals that ended up in the rendering vat had something wrong with them.

This mass of otherwise unwanted death is a measure of the animal suffering caused by human activity. Fifty percent of all chickens hatched out for the egg business are unneeded roosters that are discarded. Roughly 75 percent of all cats in shelters are euthanized. Because they were unprofitable, because they were inconvenient, because we made too many of them, they were killed.
The more that I learned about the pet-food business while writing this article, the less significant the cannibalism aspect seemed to me. My initial outrage at feeding dogs to dogs gave way to outrage at dogs being overproduced and dumped in shelters to be killed in the first place. One million deer are killed by vehicles each year. Even the plastic and Styrofoam from wasted grocery store meat that nobody even bothers to unpackage before rendering has come to seem a minor harm compared to the sins of a food system that devotes so much arable land to producing meat — in a world where people still starve to death — that we can't even get around to eating it all before the expiration date hits.

It is easy to get up in arms over something that might affect the health of our pets. Indeed, the same system that doesn't know whether its main ingredient is chicken beaks or dachshund really cannot guarantee adequate nutrition to the dogs that eat it. But perhaps we ought to be more angry about the parade of unwanted carcasses that fuel our need for a rendering industry in the first place.

Given the existence of a food system that produced this much waste, what else should we be doing with all of this excess animal protein? The alternative would probably be to toss this material in landfills. Turning it into pet food is at least a form of recycling.

Go ahead, feed this stuff to your dogs. I'm not kidding. They have to eat something, and this is what is available. Until we have a better answer for the millions of unwanted pets waiting in shelters for homes that aren't there, and until we figure out a more efficient means of turning subsidized grain into steak, this stuff exists, and we've got to do something with it. Put Lassie on the label, since she's on the menu anyway. If you don't like it, adopt a shelter dog and make sure it's neutered.

Kale kills Cancer

Well Louie is eating Kale nowadays to try and kill the cancer cells that are floating around in his body. Kale is known to kill cancer per Louie's doctor.

Here are some interestig articles on the subject:

http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/2010/12/crazy-about-kale/

she says: It helps to detoxify your liver: Kale contains the nutrients glucosinolates and methyl cysteine sulfoxides which help to activate detoxifying enzymes in the liver that play an important role in neutralising carcinogenic substances. One such glucosinolate, sulforaphane, is formed when kale is either chopped or chewed. Sulforaphane has been shown to alter the genetic expression of the liver allowing to more effectively use its detoxification enzymes.
It kills cancer cells: When kale is chopped or chewed, an enzyme called myrosinase interacts with glucosinolates to release isothiocyanates. Why should we care about these weird, hard-to-pronounce words? Isothiocyanates have been shown to inhibit carcinogenesis and to cause cancer cell apoptosis (aka open a can of whoop ass on them).

Veterinary Holistic Medicine: It's not an apple a day... it's the honey!: Voice of Russia American Edition

Veterinary Holistic Medicine: It's not an apple a day... it's the honey!: Voice of Russia American Edition

This is from Louie's holistic vet.

Alternative medicines including acupuncture are now being studied and used in such institutions as the national institutes of health.
And if you think this means that modern medicine is going to the dogs... well, I have with me at least one person who is glad of it.
Host Andrew Hiller spoke with Dr. Richard Palmquist, a veternarian with the Centinela Animal Hospital in Inglewood, Calif., to discuss more.

He is Louie's Holistic Doctor and is doing a wonderful job with him!

Back to June...should I?

I must admit writing a blog about Louie's cancer is not easy! If I write this blog than I must acknowledge he has/had cancer and I have always been in denial. Maybe it doesn't matter because the things I have to do to keep Louie healthy are so intense that I don't have time to acknowledge whether he has cancer or not!

Well, Back to June:
June 2012 is when Louie began limping after slipping on our new ceramic tile. Naive as I was, he was chasing our new kitten and I figured he slipped and sprained his ankle. April, my partner, took Lou to Calimesa Vet Office and the doctor moved the ankle/leg around and diagnosed it as a sprain.....and sent us home with pain meds and a "Not to worry diagnosis'!

Two weeks later, Louie was still limping and I saw an add for East Valley Vetrinary in Mentone, CA for acupuncture  Since Louie's limp had not gone away I figured acupuncture might work. So off to the doctor we went.

I will never forget how shocked I was when Dr Seoud suggested ruling out Osteosarcoma, bone cancer!

As we sat while they xrayed Louie, April and I barely muttered a word......Cancer.....no it couldn't be!

Well on that fateful day in June of 2012, Louie's xrays came back with a spot on the wrist of his front paw! Here's what we saw. You will notice a shadow in his bone right above the joint. This was considered very suspicious and looking like cancer.

So June off 2012 began our adventure with Louie the Cancer dog. I must admit when I saw the xrays I did not readily accept the diagnosis. In fact, the next day I wisked Louie off to North Side Vetrinary in San Bernardino, CA for a second opinion......and not the last I received. I will explain in my next post!

Happy Friday...Louie's Wheely is here

Well it;s 29 degrees here in SoCal. Guess it snowed in some areas.
Poor barn cats are all curled up with each other keeping warm on the proch.
Thank God I blanketed the horses.

Going to finally have are laundry room moved to the garage so we can use the room for a pantry. Personally, I am always scared when we hire someone to move water and gas lines. I always get scared they will jack things up. Guess I will be sure and clarify some things before the hammering starts to put my mind at peace.

Louie's wheelchair finally came yesterday and I promise to post pics this morning when he takes his first walk. It's neat to see a tripawd walk easy on his 3 legs with the assistance of his wheely.

Here are some preliminary pics:

Yippee Ki Yay

Yeppers...we went to the Series1 - Round 1 Buckle Series Sorting Event yesterday at the Yucaipa Equestrian Arena. Met and talked with some very nice people and watched the teams, pros and amateurs working and sorting the cows. If you own a horse you will find yourself getting all enthused about riding and working with your horse.

For me, since I have two knee replacements, I so need to build my horse ramp so I can get on my horse since I can't bend my knees up high enough to reach and lift myself in the saddle.

Anyone want to help? LOL

I have a great horse who is trained to let you stand on a platform above him....most horses don't like that. His name is Poppy and he is a seventeen year old Quarter/Arab mix. Some would say he has losey confirmation but I love him.

There's my baby in saddle. Good old horse I would say.

I have another horse, Bandit but he has a bum leg and can't be ridden anymore. Torn this and that in his leg. He was our bestest of horses. But we still love him.

It's so weird, I had my knees replaced, my horse has a bum leg and my dog has a leg amputated........weird how our animals replicate us!

Either way, it is my goal to get my fat butt in shape enough t get up on my horse. I really need to take riding lessons so I can get my confidence up. Im a little too hesitant and scared and maybe a trainer could help me? Well guys, have a great Sunday and if you love horses and live in the Yucaipa, Ca area look up the Equestrian Arena for info on their events. http://www.centsable1.com/

Morning Sunday Morning

It's a little bit chilly here in SoCal. Looks like rain today and it's cold enough to snow on the mountains.

Here's what the weather looks like from my back porch. I've got a great warm fire going this morning to take the chill off the house too.
The mountains looking foggy
Rain is threatening to let loose soon

Fire in the fireplace.....nice and warm
